% I could not find specifics for several STD policies; I assumed the policy is a typical one: 6 weeks after birth for vaginal delivery; 8 weeks for Caesarian

* Yale: Not clear if postdocs are eligible for STD

** University of Florida: Longer waiting period increases payout

*** Stanford: the postdoc might be covered under California Disability Insurance if < 3 months employment

**** University of Texas: if pre-existing condition, limits payouts to 4 weeks

***** University of Florida: if pre-existing condition, no payouts for pregnancy or birth

****** Cornell: has an "as needed" sick and disability leave policy in lieu of STD insurance

STD = short term disability

Short term disability period = period of time the disability covers; payouts may be shorter than this time

STD waiting period = length of time during the STD period that must occur before payouts happen

STD payout = percent of normal salary paid during the disability period

STD premiums = who pays for the STD insurance premiums? If “University,” then postdocs are automatically enrolled at the expense of the university. If “Postdoc,” then postdocs must opt in to the insurance (usually upon starting employment) and pay the premiums, typically about $15/month

Must use other leave first? = must use up sick leave and/or vacation leave before payouts start

Previous employment required = STD payouts are not provided if an employee has not been employed for a minimum amount of time

Pre-existing condition clause = STD payouts are not provided (or are reduced) if the postdoc was pregnant when the insurance went into effect, typically on the start of employment
